• Puppies instinctively seek absorbent surfaces to go to the toilet such as grass or carpet
• Dogs generally do not toilet where they eat and drink
• Dogs will toilet generally where they have toileted before.
• Most dogs have a routine around toilet time.
• Most dogs show you when they’re about to toilet by sniffing or circling for example.
• Dogs scent mark at times, and in de-sexed males tend to do this more so than de-sexed males and females.

• Take them for a short walk or outside after their meal. Make sure they toilet. If you notice they have toileted outside, immediately reward them with a treat. They will associate the toileting outside with wanted behaviour.
• Limit the areas in the house they have access to until they’ve mastered it.
• Watch for the signs, if you notice they’re starting to sniff about or circle, take them outside.
• Move their food bowl and drink bowl inside the house. They will then associate this with an area they live in and will not toilet in that particular area.
• If they have had an accident, clean that area very thoroughly and be sure NOT to use any cleaning products other than hot water or ammonia free products so as not to leave any scent behind.

Under any circumstances, do not rub their nose into their excrement, or punish them for toileting inside.
